Description
Technical Parameters
A gas water heater thermocouple is a safety device used in gas-powered water heaters. Its purpose is similar to the thermocouple in a gas oven heater, which is to detect the presence of a pilot flame and prevent the flow of gas if the flame goes out.
The thermocouple consists of two different metal wires joined together at one end. This joint is positioned in the pilot flame so that it gets heated when the pilot light is lit. As the joint heats up, it generates a small electrical voltage.
The other ends of the thermocouple wires are connected to a gas valve or control system. The voltage generated by the heated joint signals to the gas valve that the pilot flame is present. As long as the pilot flame is lit and the thermocouple continues to generate a voltage, the gas valve remains open, allowing the flow of gas to the burner assembly.
