Elbow Head Gas Thermocouple

An elbow head gas thermocouple is a specific type of thermocouple used in gas appliances, such as gas water heaters or gas furnaces. It is characterized by its elbow-shaped or bent design, which allows for easier installation and positioning within the appliance.

The elbow head thermocouple consists of two dissimilar metal wires joined together at one end, forming the sensing junction. This junction is typically positioned near the pilot flame of the gas appliance. When the pilot flame is ignited, the heat generated by the flame causes the thermocouple to produce a small electrical voltage.

The other ends of the thermocouple wires are connected to a gas safety valve or control system. The voltage generated by the heated junction signals to the gas valve that the pilot flame is present and stable. As long as the flame is detected and the voltage is within the expected range, the gas valve remains open, allowing the flow of gas to the main burner.
