Technical Parameters
A thermocouple for a furnace serves the same basic purpose as the thermocouples in gas ovens and water heaters. It is a safety device designed to detect the presence of a flame and ensure the safe operation of the furnace.
In a furnace, the thermocouple is typically located near the pilot light or ignition system. It consists of two dissimilar metal wires joined together at one end. This joint is placed in the flame path so that it gets heated when the pilot light is lit or the ignition system ignites the main burner.
As the joint of the thermocouple heats up, it generates a small electrical voltage. This voltage is used to keep the gas valve open, allowing the flow of gas to the burners. It serves as a confirmation that the flame is present and stable.
