A millivolt thermocouple, also known as a millivolt generator or millivolt gas valve, is a type of thermocouple system commonly used in gas-powered appliances, such as fireplaces, wall heaters, and some heating systems.
Millivolt thermocouples generate a small electrical voltage, typically in the range of a few millivolts (mV), when exposed to a temperature gradient. This voltage is generated at the thermocouple's sensing junction, where two dissimilar metal wires are joined together.
In a millivolt thermocouple system, the generated voltage is used to power a gas valve or control system. The millivolt signal is connected to a gas valve that controls the flow of gas to the main burner. As long as the millivolt signal is present and within the expected range, the gas valve remains open, allowing the appliance to operate.
