A rhodium thermocouple is a type of thermocouple that utilizes the precious metal rhodium as one of the thermoelectric materials. Rhodium is often combined with platinum to form an alloy that is used in certain types of thermocouples.
Rhodium-based thermocouples are commonly used in high-temperature applications where accuracy and stability are crucial. They are known for their excellent resistance to corrosion and oxidation at elevated temperatures, making them suitable for harsh environments.
There are different types of rhodium-based thermocouples, including Type R (Platinum/Rhodium), Type S (Platinum/Rhodium), and Type B (Platinum/Rhodium-Iridium). These thermocouples utilize different combinations of platinum and rhodium alloys in their construction.
Type R thermocouples use a positive leg made of pure platinum and a negative leg made of an alloy consisting of 13% rhodium. They are primarily used in high-temperature applications, ranging from 0°C to 1600°C (32°F to 2912°F).
Type S thermocouples also have a positive leg made of pure platinum but use a negative leg made of an alloy consisting of 10% rhodium. They are commonly employed in similar high-temperature applications as Type R, with a slightly extended temperature range of up to 1700°C (3092°F).
Type B thermocouples have a positive leg made of platinum and a negative leg made of an alloy consisting of 30% rhodium and 6% iridium. They are used in the most extreme temperature ranges, typically from 0°C to 1800°C (32°F to 3272°F).
